TO WRITE

　ジョージ・マイケルとワム！を結成していた、アンドリュー・リッジリーは英紙『ガーディアン』に対し、以下のコメントを出している。

“George would be beside himself [that] after all of these years, [we’ve]　finally obtained Christmas No. 1. Yog (George) said that he wrote ‘Last Christmas’ with the intention of writing a Christmas No 1. It’s mission accomplished!”

「クリスマスチャートでようやく1 位を取ったとジョージが知ったら、狂喜しただろう。ヨグ（ジョージのこと）はクリスマスチャートで1 位を取るために『ラスト・クリスマス』を書いたって言っていた。ミッション達成だ！」

　まず、本日は動詞writeについて学習する。

　

　上の例文のwriting a Christmas No 1のwritingだが、このwritingはその前にhe wrote ‘Last Christmas’とwroteがあるので、動詞writeが重なると思うかもしれない。

　どちらも「書く」が原意であるが、writing a Christmas No 1のwritingは「～を獲る、記録する」といった意味で使われている。
