マーベルのX-MENの人気キャラクター、Wolverineの決めゼリフに、

The best there is at what I do. But what I do isn’t very nice.(おれがやることは最高だが、それほどいいことじゃない。)

　があるが、このthere isに「はて」となってしまう。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を考えてみよう。

以下に挙げた用例を見ると、わかりやすいのではないだろうか？

○Practical Example

"He's the fastest there is on the track."

「彼はトラック競技で最も速い選手だ」

"She's the smartest there is in our class."

彼女は私たちのクラスで最も賢い生徒だ」

　最初の用例で言えば、

　He's the fastest on the track.は、He's the fastest there is on the track.と言っても基本的に同じだが、"there is" を加えることでそ強調される。

"He's the fastest on the track."

は単純に彼がトラック競技でいちばん速いという事実を述べているが、

"He's the fastest there is on the track."

だと、「彼がトラック競技でいちばん速い」という事実が強く、断定的に表現される。彼がその分野で際立って優れているという印象が強調されるのだ。

　there isを使うことで、文のトーンがより自信に満ちたものになり、話者がその情報に確信を持っているという意味合いが強まる。
