For me, the writing of history has very often been collaborative. The list of colleagues and coauthors I’ve worked with in the making of American histories is too long to include, to say nothing of the hundreds of scholars whose work I have drawn on in writing this tale. But I owe a particular debt of gratitude to those who read this Little History in draft: Mark Lytle, Christine Heyrman, Michael McCann, John Rugge, Ken Ludwig, Mary Untalan, and Antonia Woods. Chris Rogers, my friend and steadfast editor at Yale Press, provided more than one close reading, while Margaret Otzel and Erica Hanson eased my way through production. I owe a special thanks to Gordon Allen. Forty years ago, he executed the drawings for my first book, a guide to wilderness canoeing written with John Rugge.  動詞acknowledgeは「謝意を表明する」の意味でもつかわれるので、あわせて覚えておこう。
