TO FUSS WITH, TO FUSS AROUND WITH

　fussは副詞を伴って自動詞として「やきもき[空騒ぎを]する」などいろいろな意味で使われるが、fuss withで、「あれこれかまう[いじる] 」（リーダーズ）の意味でよく使われる。

『コンパスローズ英和辞典』に 「ささやかに、ほどほどに、しとやかに」とあるように、「目立たないように、さりげなく」の意味で解釈すればよい。

　動詞furrowは「しわ［溝］を刻む」、形容詞furrowedは「深いしわが刻まれた」「溝ができた」。

WIRED, NOT WIRED

　wiredは通常、電気回路やコンピュータの配線に使われる語で、「有線の、インターネットに接続された」といった意味で使われるが、人間に使う場合、「性格や思考パターンがほかの人と異なっている、特別である」と感じることが表現される。

　たとえば、You’re not wired right.は「お前はちょっとおかしいんだ」といった意味になり、話し手は相手の考え方や行動が標準的なものとは違っていると感じていることを示す。

　今日はこのwiredの使い方を学習しよう。

　もちろん、いい意味でも使われる。

　形容詞studiedは「あらかじめ用意[計画]した、故意の」ということであるが、状況によっては「企んだ、作意のある、わざとらしい」というネガティブな意味で使われることもあるが、「熟慮された、考え抜かれた」とポジティブな意味で用いられる。

THAT WHICH

　仕事はひとつずつ、そしてわたしの場合、迅速に片づけていくしかない。

　すでに刊行を待つだけの本が2点、訳稿を提出してゲラ待ちの本が３点、そして今週月曜日に大きな仕事の訳稿を１点提出した。

　そして今は自閉症の作家が書いた小説を１冊訳しているが、これがかなりすごい上に、おそらくヴァージニア・ウルフの語りに強い影響を受けていると思われ、随所に美しい、格調ある文体が出てきて、知識もなければ格調も高くないこの訳者は毎日苦しみながら翻訳を進めている。

　たとえば、こんなフレーズが主人公の語りとして出てくる。

I felt then as if I had inadvertently banned that which I wanted from my home, and, for the first time ever, Dolly no longer felt like all there was or even like enough.

　わたしは自分が望んでいたものを迂闊にも家から締め出してしまったように感じた。そしてそんなことはこれまでなかったけど、わたしにとってドリーがすべてではないと思えたし、ドリーがいればそれで十分というわけではなくなった気もした。

　

　問題はthat whichだろう。これは『リーダーズ』に次のように定義されている。例文とあわせてご覧いただきたい。

…するもの《これはかたくるしい表現で, 今は通例 what を用いる》.

･That which (＝What) you say is true. きみの言うことは本当だ.

　これは関係代名詞の thatとwhich を組み合わせて、「〜するもの」や「〜であるもの」といった意味を表す。

A SUNSHINE MAN/WOMAN

「晴れ男（女）」は研究社オンラインディクショナリ（KOD）のEV（追加語彙）にある通り、

a “sunshine 「man [woman]” who brings clear skies with 「him [her] wherever 「he [she] goes; a 「man [woman] who seems to bring the sun out when 「he [she] is present.

と言えばよい。KODはこういった訳例がほとんど載っているので、すばらしい。
