すでに何度かGetUpEnglishでも書いているとおり、まったく油断ならない。次の描写があった。

　“Then we should be extra suspicious because the universe is always playing a bad joke on me, I swear. You know what?” He leans toward her and faux-whispers, “I bet Panda-Mania shows up again.”

　これは明らかに定型表現だが、新しい言い方のようで、ふつうの辞書には載っていない。

　1980年にアメリカ北米で使われたとあるこのdo someone a solidは「誰かに親切にする、助けてあげる」 という意味のスラングだ。
solid はここではfavorと同じで、「親切な行為、恩義」というニュアンスで使われている。
　例を挙げる。

〇Practical Example
"Dude, can you do me a solid and cover my shift tomorrow?"
"Yeah, no problem!"
「なあ、明日のシフト代わってくれない？」
「いいよ、問題ない！」

　そしてthe universeは「宇宙」であるが、この場合は「運」というような意味でとらえればよい。このthe universeがすぐ下にも出てくるので、それに注意しながら引用した部分を訳せば、次のようになる。

「でも、おかげでそのケーラさんに聞きたいことを聞けるわけじゃない。これはもう、運命が味方してくれているとしか思えないわ」MJがそう振る。
「だったら、よけい警戒しないとだめだね。僕の人生、マジで運命がいつも悪い冗談を仕掛けてくるんだ」ピーターはMJに身を寄せて、J冗談めかして小声でささやく。「絶対にまたパンダマニアが出てくるって賭けてもいいよ」
