日本でも大人気のイギリスのacid jazzバンド、Incognitoの新譜がすばらしい。
1曲目の“Keep Me In The Dark”から爽やかなグルーヴ感が味わえる。
I’ve asked you a hundred times
You told me a thousand lies...
のNatalie Duncanのノリのいいヴォーカルで始まるこの曲は、パートナーに常に嘘をつかれている女性の心情を歌っている。
keep darkは、「隠れている、〈事を〉秘しておく」だ。
keep me in the darkで、「わたしを闇に置く」、「わたしに何か隠している」。
今日のGetUpEnglishはkeep darkを学習する。

keep ... in the darkは、「～を闇に置く」「～に情報を知らせない」。ある情報や事実をある人やグループから隠し続けること。
インコグニートは2015年の来日公演で観たのが最後になった。今年の来日公演はぜひ参加したい。
protocolは、「（外交上の）儀礼、典礼」。
GetUpEnglishでもすでに学習した。
ただ、この語は状況によっては「手順、規定」などの日本語に訳したほうがよいことがある。
1月2日の日本航空516便衝突炎上事故のニュースに次の表現があった。

Emergency protocol stipulates that crew must have permission from the cockpit to open any emergency exits. The captain stood near the two exits up front and gave the go-ahead for evacuation.
「緊急時の手順として、乗務員は緊急出口を開けるにあたってコックピットからの許可を得なければならない。機長は前方の二つの出口の近くに立ち、避難開始の許可を出した」

In the photo, a young female teacher is enthusiastically explaining a lesson, her expression lively and engaged. The child listens intently, her gaze fixed on the teacher with a look of earnest curiosity. Given the focused attention in their study session, the child's grades are sure to improve.
写真の若い女性の先生が熱心に勉強を教えている。表情は生き生きとしていて、教えることに集中している。子供は熱心に耳を傾け、すごく興味深そうに先生を見つめている。ふたりは勉強に集中しているから、子供の成績は確実に上がるだろう。
動詞engageは「夢中にさせる」の意味でも使われる。会話で使えるようにしておこう。

The title of 2013’s Infinity miniseries suggests that it, too, is a sequel to The Infinity Gauntlet— or, at least, a bustling crossover event prominently featuring Thanos. Written by Hickman and drawn by a small legion of artists, it draws the casts of both Avengers and New Avengers into a plot-dense but not very coherent storyline involving Thanos, an interstellar war on many fronts, the introduction of the Black Order that would appear in the Avengers: Infinity War film a few years later, and a desperate stratagem that results in the creation of a new generation of superpowered Inhumans.

2013年のミニシリーズ『インフィニティ』のタイトルを見れば、これも『インフィニティ・ガントレット』の続編であり、少なくともサノスをメイン・キャラクターにする大きなクロスオーバー・ストーリー・イベントであるとわかる。ジョナサン・ヒックマン原作で、かなりのアーティストが名を連ねるこの『インフィニティ』シリーズには、『アベンジャーズ』からも『ニューアベンジャーズ』☆からもあらゆるキャラクターが参入し、サノスがやろうとしていることや、サノスが宇宙のあらゆる場所に広げようとする戦争や、数年後に公開される映画『アベンジャーズ：インフィニティ・ウォー』にも出てきたサノスが率いるブラック・オーダーの存在や、サノスを倒すには新世代の超人力集団インヒューマンズ☆に頼るしかないという絶望的な計画のことなど、いくつものエピソードがやや拡散的に展開する。

あたりは情報量が多い上に、マーベル・コミックのストーリーも知っておかないとわからない、必要な知識を補足的に加えて訳さないと読者はまったくわからない、というものなので、ものすごく時間がかかってしまう。
そして英語表現も油断ならない。赤字にしたa small legion of...という表現にご注目いただきたい。
legionは「軍隊」であるが、「多数、多勢」の意味でも使われる。
legion（軍隊、軍団）という言葉は大量の人々や物を指すのに使われるが、ここでのa small legion ofは大軍団ではないものの、「ちょっとした軍団」、すなわち「相当な数の」と言う意味になる。膨大ではないが相当な数のアーティストたちがこのプロジェクトに力を注いだということだ。
smallは状況によって、「ちょっとした量の、かなりの」の意味で使われる。
では、smallで「かなりの」の意味を表す用例をいくつか示す。

「そのプロジェクトはかなりの資金を得た」
"She has a small collection of rare books."
「彼女はかなりの数の珍しい本を集めている」

smallは状況によって「少しの、少量の」の文字通りの意味ではなく、「かなりの」や「相当な」などの意味で使われることがある。
animationは「アニメーション、動画」であるが、「生気、活気」の意味でも使われる。

特に意見や方針、態度などをまるで変えてしまう状況を指して使われる。

今日のGetUpEnglish本書で出会った表現を紹介したい。
次のようなことが「注」にも膨大に出てくるのでまったく油断ならない。
When Avengers: Age of Ultron came out in 2015, The Wall Street Journal analyzed which characters had appeared most often in the seven hundred–odd Avengers comics published up to that point. Captain America had been part of the group more often than not, with a few extended breaks; Iron Man, Thor, and the Vision were the only other members who had appeared in more than three hundred issues. (The Hulk had appeared a mere thirty-seven times— fewer than the likes of Starfox, Crystal, Sersi, and Goliath, none of whom have ever headlined comic books of their own.)
2015年に『アベンジャーズ：エイジ・オブ・ウルトロン』が公開された際、『ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル』が、それまでに発刊された約700冊の『アベンジャーズ』コミックスでいちばん多く登場したキャラクターを突き止めた。キャプテン・アメリカは何度か長い休みはあったものの、700冊を通じてほぼ常にグループの一員だった。キャプテン・アメリカにつづいて300回以上登場したキャラクターは、アイアンマン、ソー、ヴィジョンのみとなる（意外なことにハルクはわずか37回の登場に留まり、スターフォックス、クリスタル、サーシ、ゴリアテのように自身のシリーズを持たないキャラクターよりも『アベンジャーズ』コミックへの登場は少なかった）
ひとつ、やっかいなのはこの表現だろう。
Captain America had been part of the group more often than not,
直訳すれば、「キャプテン・アメリカはそのグループの一員（part）でなかった（not）よりもあったほうがずっと頻繁だ」ということだから、「アベンジャーズの一員であったほうがずっと多い」ということになる。
ったく、もっとストレートに言えよ、という表現が本書には満載だが、アメリカで映画や音楽の批評をする人はこのように書く人が多いように思う。本書の著者もそのひとりだ。
more often than notは、「大抵の場合」「しばしば」という意味で使われ、何かが通常より頻繁に起こることを示す。この言い方を４つか紹介する。

"She finds herself reading more often than not these days."
「彼女は自分でもわかるが、最近は以前よりよく本を読んでいる」
"In this company, hard work is rewarded more often than not."
「この会社では、一生懸命働ければ、大抵報われるんだ」
"More often than not, he prefers to spend his evenings quietly at home."
「彼は晩を家で静かに過ごすの大抵好む」
"We find that customers choose quality over price more often than not."
「どうやら顧客は価格よりも品質を選ぶようだ」
metaphysicは「形而上学の体系[理論]」、metaphysicalは「形而上学」であり、全くその通りなのだが、英日翻訳でいつも思うのは、「形而上学」「形而上学的な」という訳語ではたして読者はわかるのだろうか、ということだ。
わたし自身、「形而上学」「形而上学的な」がどういうことか説明できない。
こういう訳語はよくあると思う。そういう場合は、
①その訳語を日本語の辞典で意味を確認し、
②その意味を文脈にあわせて調整して訳す
ということができると思う。
metaphysicとmetaphysicalを例にとれば、
①「「形而上学」は、『Weblio実用日本語表現辞典』に、
形而上学（けいじじょうがく）とは、存在そのものや宇宙の根本原理を探求する哲学の一分野である。物事の本質や真理、実在といった抽象的な概念を扱い、物理的な現象を超えた領域を考察する。形而上学は、古代ギリシャの哲学者アリストテレスに始まり、その後の西洋哲学に大きな影響を与えてきた。 形而上学は、存在論、実在論などの概念を含む。存在論は「存在とは何か」を問い、実在論は「実在とは何か」を問う。これらの問いは、形而上学が探求する根本的なテーマである。
とある。
一瞬、さらにわからなくなってしまったが、「存在そのものや宇宙の根本原理を探求する」のキーワードを汲み取ればよい。
これによって、②は以下のように処理できると思う。

「宇宙の根本的な問題」「超越的な」と訳すことで、形而上学が扱う深い哲学的な問題やテーマが一読で理解できると思う。
動詞subvertは「覆す、崩壊させる、損なう」。特に既存のシステム、構造、信念などを変革しようとする行為を指す。
