先週末の台風の混乱からなかなか抜け出すことができず、本日もGetUpEnglishは現在鋭意翻訳中の本にある表現をご紹介します。

Searching for the Salvator in British archives, Dalivalle thumbed through reams of rarely-consulted documents on thin, yellowed paper, written in faded brownish ink. Under the vaulted sixteenthcentury timber ceiling of the Duke Humfrey reading room in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, where each panel is painted with an image of an open book, she pored through manuscripts.

　イギリスのアーカイブで『サルバトール・ムンディ』を探してダリヴァレは、黄色くなった薄い紙に茶色インクで消えかかった文字の記された滅多に見られることのない膨大な文書に目を走らせた。オックスフォードのボドレー図書館のデューク・ハンフリー読書室の丸天井は一六世紀の丸太がはめ込まれて作られ、パネル一つひとつに開いた本の絵が描かれているが、その下で数々の写本を追った。

　thumb throughは「（本に）急いで目を通す」

　reams of... は「大量の…」

　manuscriptはこの場合は「写本」だが、複数になっているので、その感じを訳に出したい。

　大変な時期ですが、毎日決まった分量をこなし、締め切りに遅れることなく訳稿を提出したいです。管理人のように複数の仕事をしている者は、「毎日確実に仕事を進める」ことが大切です。
