猗窩座は人間だった頃は狛治（はくじ）といい、病気の父と暮らしていた。
寝たきりの父と幼い子供の暮らしはやはり貧しく、狛治は父の薬の代金のためにスリを繰り返して、薬を買って病気を治そうとした。
だが、捕まれば厳罰を受け、その度に腕に罪人としての入れ墨を入れられてた。
その入れ墨の6本目が刻まれた日、父は首を吊って自殺をする。
父の遺言は「真っ当に生きろ、まだやり直せる。俺は人様から金品を奪ってまで生き続けたくはない。迷惑をかけて申し訳なかった」
父が亡くなった後江戸に行き、あてもない狛治は毎日喧嘩ばかりしいた。
そんな時、狛治は慶蔵に出会い、慶蔵自分の道場に来ないかという。
慶蔵は狛治を家に連れて帰り、娘の身体が弱いことや妻が看病疲れで入水自殺したことを話す。そして娘の看病をしてほしいと頼む。
そこで狛治は慶蔵の娘恋雪に出会う。
狛治は恋雪の看病と慶蔵から武術を学ぶ毎日を過ごす。
恋雪の体調も良くなったころ、狛治は慶蔵に道場を継いでほしいと告げられる。
慶蔵の言葉に驚き、父の遺言を思い出す。
狛治はまだやり直せるかもしれないと思うと同時に、慶蔵と恋雪のことを命を懸けて守りたいと願う。
そして初めて会った頃の約束を果たし、恋雪と花火を見に行く。

あたりは英文は過去形だが、日本文は現在形だ。これは英日翻訳する上でよく考えるべきことだが、過去形で書かれた英文を日本語にするとき、すべて「…だった、…だった」とするのは単調だから、適当に「…である、…している」という現在形の言い方を入れたほういいと翻訳学校などで習うという話を聞くが、この英文と和文を比較してみればこういうことが言えると思う。
「作者の語りが登場人物の語りに一致している、寄り添っているとき」には、「英語が過去形で書かれていても、日本語では現在形の言い方がふさわしい、自然だ」ということになる。
このあたりは英日翻訳だけでなく、日英翻訳をするとよくわかる。

大江健三郎、高校生のときに『飼育』を読んでから、ずっとファンです。
現在、『ハックルベリー・フィンの冒険』を読んでいるのですが、大江がマーク・トウェインの名作に影響を受けながら、1960年代に起こっていた大きな問題を考えていたことがわかります。
Adventures of Huckleberry Finnは読めば読むほど新しいことがわかる。
12章でハックとジムが難破船のなかを探索する場面があるが、そこでふたりはtexasという「（川蒸気船の）最高甲板室」をめざしていく場面がある。
これを調べていたら、Wikipediaにこう記されていた。
The texas is a structure or section of a steamboat that includes the crew's quarters. It is located on the hurricane deck, which is also called the texas deck. This long, narrow cabin is near and may be surmounted by the pilothouse.
高級船員に与えられる甲板室で、この上または前に操舵室があるのだ。
さらに以下のおもしろい記述があった。テキサス州にちなむもので、そしてまさしく『ハックルベリー・フィンの冒険』によってこの表現は知られるようになったのだ。

忙しくなると読書がしたくなるが、新しいものを読み出すと止まらなくなってしまうことがよくあるので、古典を読み返すようにしている。
Adventures of Huckleberry Finnはいつ読んでも多くのことが学べる。
9章に以下の表現がある。

ここで注意したいのがfiddleだ。これはもちろん「ヴァイオリン」だが、violinはイタリア語から英語に入ってきたが、fiddleは英語。フォーク・ミュージックやカントリー・ミュージックでは、今もヴァイオリンと呼ばずにフィドルと呼ばれることが多い。
そして、play [be] second fiddleで「人の下につく, わき役を務める」の意味で使われる。「合奏で第二ヴァイオリンを弾く」の意味から来ている。

A 500-year-old painting stolen from a Naples' church museum has been discovered in an apartment on the outskirts of the southern Italian city.

Staff at the San Domenico Maggiore museum were not even aware the portrait of Christ, believed to have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci's student Giacomo Alibrandi, was missing.
The painting is a copy of the famous Salvator Mundi, attributed to da Vinci himself, that sold for a record $US450 million ($591 million) in New York in 2017, making it the most expensive work sold at auction.
"The painting was found on Saturday thanks to a brilliant and diligent police operation," Naples prosecutor Giovanni Melillo said.
"There was no complaint on the matter and, in fact, we contacted the [church] prior, who was not aware of its disappearance as the room where the painting is kept has not been open for three months."
The museum collection had been closed because of coronavirus restrictions.
Police said a tip-off led them to the apartment at the weekend and they found the painting tucked away in a cupboard.
