WHAT GIVES?

　"What gives?"は、元々アメリカの口語的な言い方。to giveが使われているが、何かを「与える」ということでない。これは「何があったんだ、どうしたの、どうなっているんだ」という意味で用いられる。

○Practical Example

　"What gives with Dr. Takeshima? He's really acting weird lately."

　"Oh, he's apparently pretty sick himself. I think he's worried that he might need an operation himself."

　「武島医師はどうしたんだ？　最近、何だか様子が変だぞ」

　「うん、武島先生は病気らしい。ご自身が手術を受けなければならないらしく、悩んでいるんだと思う」

●Extra Point

　「何かがおかしい、何かが普通でない」と思うときに、この"What gives?"が用いられる。

◎Extra Example

　"The plane's departure time has passed and there has been no announcement. What gives?"

　"Oh, they're probably having some sort of technical problem. I'm sure everything is okay."

　「飛行機の出発時間はすでに過ぎているのに、何のアナウンスもない。一体どうなっているんだ？」

　「おそらく、技術的な問題が生じているんだ。大丈夫だよ」
