　昨日のGetUpEnglishでは、連続テレビ小説『カムカムエヴリバディ』(毎週月～土曜朝8:00-8:15ほか、NHK総合ほか※土曜は月～金曜の振り返り)のがオダギリジョー演じる大月錠一郎の名ゼリフを英語で紹介した。

　いつものように英語便にネイティブ・チェックをお願いしたが、そのコメントがすばらしく、大変勉強になった。本日のGetUpEnglishでは英語便の講師のそのコメントを紹介しよう。

　それぞれの英文の上に書いたものがわたしの提出訳、下が英語便講師の修正案である。

「そやから僕にはわかるんや。五十嵐くんは、ひなたのことを大事に思ってくれてる」

01.That’s why I know how good well you take care of my daughter.

01. We do not do something "good." We do it "well." "I know how well this care home takes care of all its residents."

　do wellの使い方が確認できる説明だ。単純なことだが、間違えないと学べないし、間違いを指摘され、例を挙げて使い方を示してもらうことで身につく。

　That’s why I know how well you take care of my daughter.

「暗闇にかすかな光が見えた。るいの手をつかんで歩き始めた道の向こうに。そしたら、生まれてきてくれた。まぶしい光の塊みたいなひなたが」

02. I saw a dim light in the dark beyond the road and I set on the road with holding Rui’s hand. Then my baby was born, a bright clump of light.

02. This is unclear because it's one sentence with three actions taking place (see a dim light/the road I set on/holding his hand). The best possible correction I can see here is to change this to: "I saw a dim light in the dark beyond the road. I then SET OUT on the road WHILE holding Rui's hand." This is now two sentences and the phrasal verb "set out" is used. It means to begin a journey. "While" is used to indicate two actions happening at the same time (set out on the journey and holding his hand)

　andをはさんで、Iではじまる文をつづけてしまったので、どうかなと思っていたが、やっぱり修正された。理由説明もありがたい。

　これはこのように修正された。

　I saw a dim light in the dark beyond the road. I then set out on the road while holding Rui's hand.　Then my baby was born, a bright clump of light.

「これからいろんなことがあると思うけど、それが五十嵐くんの選んだ道やったら、きっとそれは、五十嵐くんの“ひなたの道”になる」

03. I know you will experience a lot from now, but if it is the road you choose , you will walk on the sunny side of the street.

03. The action starts from "now" as stated and looks into the future (will experience/will walk) so this verb cannot be past tense (chose). It's a first type conditional sentence using If + present tense, followed by future tense. "If you marry her, you will be happy" (If this thing happens, that thing will happen).

　choseと過去形を使えば仮定法過去になるが、完全に実現不可能なこと、願望になってしまう。このあたりを講師はネイティブ感覚で読み取って、理由説明とともに改善案を出してくれるのだ。

　これはこのように修正された。

　I know you will experience a lot from now, but if it is the road you choose, you will walk on the sunny side of the street.
