SYMPTOM

　どんな病気も「症状、徴候、症候」がある。それをしっかり見なければならない。

○Practical Example

　“I think I have the symptoms of an ulcer.”

　“You better see a doctor, Richard. It could be serious.” 　

　「ちょっと潰瘍ができているようだ」　

　「リチャード、ちゃんとお医者さんに診てもらいなさいよ。悪性かもしれないわ」

●Extra Point 　

　形容詞形はsymptomatic（徴候［症候］的な、前兆となる）だ。状況によっては、「（・・・・・・を）表わす、示す」の意味でも用いられる。

◎Extra Example

　“The pension scandal is symptomatic of the problems in the Japanese government.”

　“You’re right, Abe. You see the same thing in lots of areas of government.”

　「年金問題に、日本政府の問題がはっきり表われているね」

　「エーブ、その通りだよ。これと同じような問題を政府はほかにも抱えている」

AUTISM

　autism（自閉（症）、内閉性）は、中枢神経系（central nervous system）の障害によって発生する疾病と言われる。この病気について、そしてこの病気に悩まされているという人がいるということを認識することが大事だし、その上で対処・治療することが求められる。

○Practical Example

　“There was a time when most people didn’t know about autism.”

　“Many children must have suffered in those days.”

　「自閉症について、ほとんど知られていない時期もあった」

　「当時も多くの子供がその病気で苦しんでいたと思う」

●Extra Example

　形容詞形はautistic.

◎Extra Point

　“I know two children who are autistic.”

　“It’s important that parents and teachers recognize the symptoms, so that these children can be helped.”

　「自閉症の子供を二人知っているわ」

　「親や先生がそれはこういう病気なんだと認識することが大事だし、それで子供たちは救われるわ」

CANCER

　cancerは「癌（ガン）」。いちばん悪い病気の一つだ。

○Practical Example

　“I heard that Janet got cancer.”

　“Yes. But she discovered it early, so I’m sure she’ll be okay.”

　 「ジャネットがガンだと聞いた」

　「そうなのよ。でも、早くに見つかったから、きっとよくなると思うわ」

●Extra Point 　

　誰もがガンのcure（「（特殊な）治療（法）、 医療」「治療剤、良薬」）を求めている。このcureという語も覚えておこう。

◎Extra Example

　“I heard that Janet was cured of her cancer.”

　“Yes. It’s such good news. It’s important to find it early.”

　「ジャネットのガンが治ったと聞いた」

　「そうよ。ほんとによかったわ。早期発見は大切ね」
