TO PERFECT

　動詞perfectの使い方は注意しないといけない。「仕上げる、遂行する」のほか、「熟達[習熟]させる」や「完成する」「改善[改良]する」といった意味で使われるので、状況をよく見て判断しよう。

A popular theme in science fiction is the hero who goes back in time to alter events in the past that had a catastrophic effect on human history. At the beginning of one story a train is hurtling along the tracks with a mad bomber on board. He blows the train up as it passes a huge dam, causing a flood of water to drown a whole city. Fortunately, a secret government department has perfected a way of sending people back in time. Using its new device, it gets an agent onto the train before it leaves the station, giving him two hours to find the bomber and disable the bomb. He succeeds just in time and the city is saved. Most of us have wished we could go back in time like that to delete a message or restrain an impulse that hurt others and brought us unhappiness. But the law of consequences (or one thing follows another) takes over and we are stuck with the result of what we did.

　SFによく見られるテーマに、ヒーローが過去に戻り、人類史上、壊滅的な影響を与えたかつての出来事をその直前で変えるという筋書きがある。ある物語の冒頭で、線路を猛スピードで走る列車におそろしい爆破犯が乗っている。爆破犯は巨大なダムの前を通り過ぎる瞬間に列車を爆破して、下流の都市全域に大洪水を引き起こそうと狙っている。だが幸いなことに、政府の秘密機関が人を過去に送り込む方法をついに完成させた 。その新装置を使い、列車が駅から出る前にひとりの工作員を忍び込ませ、２時間で爆破犯を発見して、爆破を止めようとする。そして工作員が間一髪任務をやり遂げて都市は救われる。こんなふうに過去に戻れたらいいのにと、わたしたちはよく願うものだ。人を傷つけて自分も不幸にするような言葉を直前で取り消したり、そんな衝動を抑え込んだりしたいと思う。だが、因果律（ある原因がある結果につながるという法則）が支配している以上、自分がしたことから決して逃れることはできない。
