宗教者による客観的で、要領よくまとめられた宗教史の概説書（手に取るべき良書）　
研究分野の一つに宗教と金融の関係がある。これまで、宗教について、一般的概説書から、個別宗教の教義や内容の解説書、聖書やコーランなどの専門資料を調べてきた。その過程で、何かが欠けていると感じていたものがある。各宗教の客観的比較である。本書は原始宗教からごく最近の宗教までまんべんなく取り上げ、その本質を指摘している。筆者が宗教者であることから、的確に指摘できる切り口を持つている。それぞれの宗教のポイントをぶれのない、思い込みのない水準で語る。翻訳もレベルが高く、原文のタッチをよく伝えている。
一読後、これまでばらばらであった知識が、宗教の体系的理解に繋がった。久しぶりに良書に巡り合った気がした。

三大宗教を中心に学問的に解説した良書

キリスト教主教を経験している宗教学者が書いた本ということなので、キリスト教寄りなのかなぁと思って読み進めましたが、目立った偏りがなく、信者以外に向けてかみくだいて説明することに注力したのがわかる感じで、とても読みやすいです。
三大宗教を中心に、その他歴史的に大きな意味を持った宗教や派生宗派などを解説しています。

神道についても触れられていました。
海外から見ると、なんとも言えない土着自然信仰に見えるのだなぁと、逆に新鮮に感じました。
そういう部分も決して見下した感じではなく、確かな知識をもとに第三者目線から解説している部分に好感が持てます。

かなり大きく分厚い本ですが、これまで読んだ宗教関連の入門書の中では一番読みやすく、理解しやすかったです。
このシリーズはどれをとっても読みやすく中身が濃いのでお勧めです。
文字の多い本でレイアウトも地味であり、Kindle版でもあまり遜色ないので、かさばるのが気になる方はKindle版でも良いと思います。

「若い読者のための宗教史」読了
世界の宗教を幅広く学べるほか、それぞれの宗教の持つ問題点等を的確に指摘しているのが興味深い。
ただ歴史的事実を羅列する本とは違い、宗教に対する考え方や接し方を学ぶにはうってつけだと思う。
日本語訳も非常に読みやすくて良かったです(^^)

TO DELIVER ― Let's go down ２ the holy river If we drown then we'll be delivered

　動詞deliverは「…を配達する、届ける、（人）を送り届ける」の意味で使われる。
　この状況で、ご自身が危険な状態にあるにもかかわらず、日用品を配達してくださる、届けてくださる方々に、深く感謝したします。みなさんのおかげで、どうにか生き延びていられます。
　動詞deliverはほかにもいろいろな意味があって、「救い出す (relieve), 解放する〈from, of〉」（リーダーズ）の意味でも使われる。
　まさに次の表現を今全世界の人たちが求めている。

「われらをパンデミックより救いたまえ」

●Extra Point
  4年前の4月21日に亡くなったプリンスが1996年にThe Artist Formerly Known As Princeの名の下で発表した3枚組アルバムEmancipationのDisc 2の最後に"Holy River”が入っている。この歌詞にdeliverがこの意味で印象的に使われているので見てみよう。長いが、歌詞をすべて引用する。

　いつもそうだが、特にリチャード・ホロウェイ『若い読者のための宗教史』（すばる舎）を訳してから、キリスト教を含む宗教を理解することがアメリカの文化、社会、政治を理解するうえで非常に重要になると思うようになった。
　同書292ページに、Jehovah's Witnesses（エホバの証人）についての以下の記述がある。

　わたし上杉隼人は黒人のsoul musicが好きだが、ソウル・ミュージックの歌詞には黒人による宗教的でスピリチャルな内容の歌詞があふれている。
　PrinceのEmancipationに収録されたThe Stylistics のカバー”Betcha By Golly Wow“もまさにそうで、betchaはbet youで、by Gollyはby Godであるが、信仰心の強い人は、神の名前をGodと呼べないので、Heとか、あるいはGollyのようにして呼ぶ。

『若い読者のための宗教史』（すばる舎）には世界の宗教を紹介しつつ、魅力と危険性について論じている。ぜひ読んでみてほしい。
