　stretch thingsは最近使われるようになった言い方だ。

　Merriam-Websterのサイトには、

と定義されている。stretchが「引き伸ばす」ことだから、「事実を誇張する」ということだ。

Here’s an example: 2015’s Spidey #1, by writer Robbie Thompson and artist Nick Bradshaw, is the first issue of a series set at the beginning of Peter Parker’s career as Spider-Man, when he was still in high school (as he was in the comics published from 1962 to 1965). The story’s first pages recapitulate a lot of familiar images from the first Spider-Man story— the spider bite, the wrestling match, the dead uncle. But we also see him fighting the White Rabbit, a villain who didn’t appear until 1983’s Marvel Team‑Up #131. Can we imagine that there was a different White Rabbit he fought much earlier? That’s stretching things.

　一例を挙げる。２０１５年発刊『スパイディ』1号はロビー・トンプソン原作、ニック・ブラッドショウ原画のシリーズ最初の号だ。ここではまだ高校生のピーター・パーカーが（１９６２年から１９６５年に発行されたコミックと同じだ）、スパイダーマンとして活動し始めた頃が描かれる。最初の数ページで、よく知られたスパイダーマンの最初のストーリーが数多く再現される。被爆したクモに噛まれる場面、レスリングの試合、亡くなった叔父のことなどだ。だか、そこにホワイト・ラビットと戦っている姿も見られるのだ。ホワイト・ラビットは１９８３年の『マーベル・チームアップ』１３１号に初めて登場したヴィランだ。ピーターが戦っているのはそのホワイト・ラビットとは違うホワイト・ラビットだろうか？　少し無理がある。

　こんな濃い情報が「注」としてものすごい小さなQ数で膨大に出てくるのだから（それも各ページに出てくる！）、油断ならない。造本もレイアウトも相当考えないとならないだろう。

　All of the Marvelsの翻訳版『マーベル・コミック大全』（仮題）は2024年、作品社から刊行予定。
