　「……に感謝の意を申し上げます」とかなりていねいな言い方をするのであれば、I extend a show of gratitude for…を使うといい。

　動詞recognizeは、「認識する、認める」であるが、「（功績など）を認める、評価する、表彰する」の意味でも使われる。　

　そして、We would like to recognize…（……を表彰したいと思う）という言い方はよく使われる。

TO PERPETUATE

　動詞perpetuateは、「永存［永続］させる」。しかし、辞書によっては、「不朽［不滅］にする」と定義されているものもあるので、いい意味で使われることが多いと思ってしまう人もいるようだ。しかし、そうでもない。　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この動詞表現を学習しよう。

In the Woods beneath the Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom

　桜が東京でも満開となりました。

　昨年は大震災のあとで、桜を楽しむ気持ちにはとてもなれませんでしたが、今年は復興への期待と、そして被災地の人たちの心の安らぎを祈りつつ、美しい桜の花を眺めてみたいと思います。　

　坂口安吾はわたしの大好きな作家の一人です。　

　その代表作に、『桜の森の満開の下』があります。　

　安吾は、この小説の最後に、このような印象的な文章を書いています。

　安吾は、つづけて、次のように書いています。

BOLLOCKING

　bollockingは、イギリスの俗語で「きつい叱責、しかりつけること、大目玉」。　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を学習しよう。

　to give... a bollocking（……をしかる）の形でよく使われる。

　"Paul gave him a huge bollocking." 　

　「ジョージは大きなミスをした」

　Eric Claptonが、The Beatlesの1968年発表のアルバムThe Beatles（通称"The White Album"）収録のGeorge Harrisonの曲"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"でギターを弾いていることはよく知られている。　

　そのあと、クラプトンは、Creamのファイナルツアーで訪れたアメリカで、現地の音楽のよくわかる知り合い数人に、ハリソンの「ホワイル・マイ・ギター・ジェントリー・ウィープス」がいかにすごいか、ギターを弾いて聴かせて教えようとしたという。しかし、そのあとジョージから電話があって、そのことを話したところ、ジョージは激怒したと、その自伝（Clapton: The Autobiography, 2007）には書かれている。

　lusterは「光、光沢、つや、輝き」、lackは「欠如」だから、lacklusterは、「光［つや、輝き、精彩］のない、（目など）どんよりした、活気のない」。

　not, repeat notで、「絶対に……ではない」。

　first and foremostは、「まっさきに、いの一番に」。

　記念すべき7年目の最初の日は、管理人がいちばん好きな英語表現の一つを再度例文を変えて紹介したいと思います。　

　considerateは、「（他人に対して）思いやりのある」。

　"Yes, everybody who joined the company in the same year loves her."

　「美帆はやさしくて、気がきく」

　「ああ、同期の連中はみんな彼女が好きだ」

●Extra Point

　consideredは「見なされている」という意味になるので、注意しよう。
