DO YOU MIND IF…

　Do you mind if…で、「……しても構わないか？」　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を学習しよう。　

　普通は、Do you mind if..と尋ねられれば、No, I don’t.（気にしない、どうぞして）と答える。

○Practical Example

　"It's so noisy. Do you mind if I close the window?"

　"No. It'll probably be like this every day until the election is over."

　「うるさいから、窓閉めていい？」

　「うん。選挙が終わるまでは毎日こんな調子だろうね」

●Extra Point

　しかし、まれにDo you mind if..と訊かれて、Yes, Ido.と応えることがあるので注意しよう。これは名編集者の力さんから教わった表現。The Beatlesの映画Hard Day’s Nightにあった表現だ。　以下は、ビートルズの4人が移動列車の高級席に座り、そこに入って来た紳士と話す場面。

　Gentleman: Yes, I do.

　John: Four of us want it open, if it's all the same to you.

　Gentleman: It isn't. I travel on this train regularly twice a week. So, I suppose I have some rights.

　Ringo: So have we.

　紳士　「いや、だめだ」

　ジョン　「ぼくら4人は窓を開けたいと思っている。あなたもあわせるべきじゃないか？」
