TOLL

　tollは、「料金（通行料金・渡船料）」の意味で使われることもある。道路の通行料金の場合は、toll roadという。

○Practical Example

　“What’s the toll to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Zack?”

　“Three bucks into the city. But they don’t charge you when you go the other way.” 　

　「ザック、シドニーハーバーブリッジの通行料はいくら？」　

　「都市に入るのであれば、３ドルかかる。でも、帰りは無料だ」

●Extra Point 　

　to take a tollで、「（……に）被害［損失］をもたらす」。人の健康に被害をおよぼすような時も用いられる。

　“Did you finish building that new room in your house, Mr. Hooker?”

　“Yes, but it took a heavy toll on me. I hurt my back and have to rest for a few weeks.” 　

　「フッカーさん、ご自宅に新しいお部屋を作ることはできたの？」　

　「うん。でも、大変な被害を受けることになった。ぼくは腰を痛めて、数週間休まなければならなくなったよ」
