SCARY

　scaryは、hairy（毛深い、毛だらけの、毛むくじゃらな）と韻を踏んでいるが、「恐ろしい、おっかない、薄気味悪い」の意味でよく使われる。

○Practical Example

　“We had a scary experience last week. Kenji and I got lost in the woods.”

　“Oh, that must have been really scary, Toshiko. Were there wild animals there?” 　

　「先週、恐い思いをしたわ。賢治さんとわたし、森で迷ってしまったの」　

　「とし子さん、それは恐かっただろうね。野生の動物もいた？」

●Extra Point 　

　最初にhairyという語を出したが、これが「毛深い」という意味であることはみんな知っていると思う。しかし、hairyもscaryの意味で、すなわち「ぞっとするほど危険な[すごい] 」「不安な、ひやひやする、恐ろしい、おっかない」の意味でよく使われる。

　“Well, Kenji, you shouldn’t go into the woods at night. It’s a stupid thing to do.”

　「とし子とぼくは、先週森の中でほんとにこわい思いをした」
