TO KNOW THE ROPES

　ここに使われているropeはボートや船の「ロープ、なわ、綱」だ。したがって、ロープを知っていれば（to know the ropes）、船の停泊の仕方をわかっているということになる。 to know the ropesは、「こつを知っている、内部の事情に明るい」。

　“Martha really knows the ropes when it comes to cooking a meal for 20 people.”

　“Yeah, she’s amazing. She cooked the meal in less than three hours. She’s a genius in the kitchen.”

　「20人分の食事をどうやって用意するか、マーサはコツを完全につかんでいる」

　「ええ、マーサには驚いてしまうわ。3時間もかけずに20人分の食事を作ってしまったわ。あの人は料理の天才よ」
