TO ASCRIBE, ASCRIBED

　動詞ascribeは「…の原因[動機･所属･出所など]を…に帰する」

　attributeと同じ意味で用いられる。

　この場合は特にはっきり意味は出さなくても、「その人に割り当てられた動機」の意味が出る。

　発売されたばかりのFarah StockmanのAmerican Made: What happens to people when work disappear（アメリカ製　人は仕事を失った時、どうなるか？）を楽しく読んでいる。

　本日のGetUpEnglishはこの一部を紹介する。

The deep insecurity of unskilled workers—who are sometimes referred to as the “precariat” because of the precariousness of their jobs—has been exacerbated by a global pandemic that threw millions of people without work. The economic lockdowns threw into sharp relief the new divisions in our society between those who work in the knowledge economy, who might have the luxury of working from home, and those in the service industry, who must risk exposure to the virus to get paid. Work has always been a central marker of status. But during a pandemic, the kind of work a person does can determine whether that person lives or dies.

A child of working-class Jamaican immigrants in the Bronx, Colin Powell rose from neighborhood store clerk to warehouse floor-mopper to the highest echelons of the U.S. government. It was a trailblazing American dream journey that won him international acclaim and trust.

It was that credibility he put on the line in 2003 when, appearing before the United Nations as secretary of state, he made the case for war against Iraq. When it turned out that the intelligence he cited was faulty and the Iraq War became a bloody, chaotic nightmare, Powell’s stellar reputation was damaged.

　put on the line: 危険にさらした

　put.. on the lineは、以下のE-DICの説明がわかりやすい。

直訳すると「～をその線上に置く」ということになるが、ここでのthe lineは「賭け金を置くための目印としてギャンブル台に引いてある線」の意味。したがって、比喩的に「～を賭ける」とか「～を危うくする、危険にさらす」ことを指す。例えばput one's reputation on the lineは「名声を賭ける、危険にさらす」といった意味合いになる。以下のように使われる。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはそのうちのひとりslugのSamの生活を紹介する。

Glorious weather today – constant rain. There’s nothing slugs love more than a dark, damp night. Moisture is the BEST – without it, my nice thick layer of slime might dry out. My slime allows me to slither around, and it makes it more difficult for predators to grab me.

　今日の天気は実にすばらしい。ずっと雨が降っている。ナメクジにとって暗くてじめじめした夜ほどありがたいものはないよ。じめじめ湿ってるのがサイコー！　でないと、僕のこのイカした厚いヌメヌメした体がカラカラに乾いちゃうからね。このヌメヌメした体のおかげで僕はあちこちをズルズルすべっていけるし、敵が僕を食べようとしてもツルツルすべってつかまえることができないんだ。　

　動詞slitherは「ずるずるすべる［はう］」と擬音語としても機能しているので、その感じを出したい。
