MERE

　mereは、「ほんの、単なる、まったく……に過ぎない」。よくa mereと不定冠詞aと一緒に用いられる。

○Practical Example

　"How much did your new mobile phone cost, Mr. Son?"

　"It cost a mere 3000 yen. Pretty cheap, eh?" 　

　「孫さん、孫さんの新しい携帯はいくらしましたか？」　

　「たった3000円です。かなり安いでしょう？」

●Extra Point 　

　形容詞merelyも大変よく用いられる。「ただ、単に」に近い。

◎Extra Example

　"What were you doing in Nicole's bedroom, Gordon?"

　"Me? Oh, I was merely looking in her drawers for some old photos. Really."

　「ゴードン、あなた、二コルの寝室で何してたのよ？」　

　「ぼく？　ああ、彼女のタンスに古い写真があるんじゃないかと探してただけだ。ほんとだよ」
