OVER THE HILL, OVER THE MOON

　本日は、overを使った面白い表現を二つ紹介する。

　over the hillは、「（人が）盛りを過ぎて、下り坂で」、あるいは「年を取って、老けて」。

○Practical Example

　"Did you run the Boston Marathon, Naoto?"

　"Yeah, about half of it. I had to quit, Bob. Let's face it. I'm over the hill." 　「直人、ボストン・マラソン、走ったのかい？」　

　「ああ、半分だけだったけどね。途中で棄権しなければならなかったよ、ボブ。現実を見つめよう。ぼくはもう体力的に盛りを過ぎている」

●Extra Point 　

　over the hillとはまったく対照的な意味を持つのが、over the moon（「非常に幸せで」「大喜びして、有頂天」）だ。「うれしくて、とび上がって月を越えるほど」であるというイメージから生まれた表現と言われる。

◎Extra Example

　"Guess what. Momochan is going to marry me! I'm over the moon."

　"Oh, Umeno, that's fantastic! Where are you going to live?" 　

　「驚いたらあかんで。桃ちゃん、わいと結婚してくれるんや！　ごっつ、うれしい！」　

　「おお、梅野！　それはスゲーやんか！　新居はどこにするんや？」

☆Extra Extra Point 　

　to be in seventh heaven（「無上の幸福を味わう」「またとなく幸福な場所にいる」）も、over the moonと同じ意味で使われる。

★Extra Extra Example

　"We're going to live at Tennoji. I'm in seventh heaven."

　"Oh, Umeno, that's fantastic. I live in Yao. I'll come to visit you."

　「天王寺に住むで。ほんま幸せや！」

　「おお、梅野。それはめでたいわ。おれは八尾に住んどるんや。遊びに行くで」
