　今日のGetUpEnglishは、今年後半いちばん気合を入れて訳した本の一節を紹介する。

　エッセイの書き方を論じている部分だ。

It should look like a hard-fought tennis point, each player countering their opponent’s last move using all their strength, or like an end-to-end football match where both teams look like scoring a decisive goal until the last minute. A football match that’s 4-0 at half time then 4-3 at full time is less thrilling than one that goes 0-1, then 2-1, then 2-3, then 4-3. You can then decide in your final paragraph – or just in a masterful final sentence – which of the points you’ve already made have been decisive, and declare a winner on that basis. Save the best till last.

　ふたりの選手が激しく攻防を繰り広げるテニスの試合や、両チームが試合終了まで決勝ゴールをあげようと全力でぶつかりあうサッカーの試合のように、エッセイもハラハラドキドキするものにしなければならない。サッカーの試合であれば、前半終了時は４対０、終了終了時は4対３の試合より、最初は０対１だったが、２対１になり、２対３になって、４対３で終わる試合のほうが興奮する。最後のパラグラフで、あるいはよく考え抜かれた最後の一文で、それまでに述べたどの点が有効であったか明らかにし、どちらの論が正しいか宣言できるのだ。最高のものは最後まで取っておかなければならない。　

　とにかく読み応えのある1冊。論理的な記述がつづくので、息が抜けない。
