日本の近畿大学も英語表記を「KINDAI UNIVERSITY」に変更したことがあった。英語が主流言語になってしまっているいまの状況では、どれも賢明な処置かもしれない。

Adventures of Huckleberry Finnを理解するには、The Adventures of Tom Sawyerをよく読んでみる必要がある。これはもちろんトム・ソーヤーの物語であるが、完全にハックルベリー・フィンに食われてしまっている感じもある。
以下の36章のハックのセリフを読んでしまうと、読後感に残るのは自然児ハックの自由奔放さだ。

訳は柴田元幸の新潮文庫訳を確認してほしいが、It ain't for me; I ain't used to it.あたりは文法的にはIt isn't for me; I isn't used to it.となるべきだが、このあたりの表現を見ると、『トム・ソーヤーの冒険』が『ハックルベリー・フィンの冒けん』になりたがっている感じがうかがえる。
ain’tを使う言い方、曲の歌詞にもよく使われる。
わたしが真っ先に思い出すのは、Lenny Cravitzの1991年のヒット曲 “It Ain't Over Til It's Over“だ。

英語の辞書を発行する大手出版社などが毎年「今年の言葉」を発表しているが、Merriam WebsterとDictionary.comの2社は2020年にもっとも検索された語としてpandemicを選んだ。
一方Oxford Dictionaryはコロナウイルスに関する状況が日々変わり、検索語もめまぐるしく変わったので、「ひとつの語に絞れない」とした。

NEW YORK (AP) — In the land of lexicography, out of the whole of the English language, 2020's word of the year is a vocabulary of one.
For the first time, two dictionary companies on Monday — Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com — declared the same word as their tops: pandemic. A third couldn't settle on just one so issued a 16-page report instead along the same lines, noting that a world of once-specialized terms entered the mainstream during the COVID-19 crisis.
The year, Oxford Languages said in the report last week, “brought a new immediacy and urgency to the role of the lexicographer. In almost real-time, lexicographers were able to monitor and analyze seismic shifts in language data and precipitous frequency rises in new coinages."
precipitousは「崖のような, 断崖絶壁の, 切り立った」（研究社「大英和」）だが、ここでは「急激な」の意味。
副詞precipitouslyもよく使われるので、覚えておこう。

「ドルが急落した」
coinageは「硬貨鋳造」であるが、ここでは「新造語の使用」の意味で用いられている。
まさしく以下のOxford社の代表的辞書のひとつOxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaryの定義と用例が参考になる。

[C, U]はcountable（可算）もuncountable（不可算）でも使われるということ。
アメリカのジョー・バイデン次期大統領は11月30日、財務長官にジャネット・イエレン米連邦準備制度理事会（FRB）前議長（74）を指名すると発表した。
イエレン氏の指名が上院で承認されれば、女性初の財務長官となる。イエレン氏の指名は以前から米メディアで有力視されていた。

大人気の『鬼滅の刃』だが、英語圏でも人気で、Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaibaのタイトルで翻訳書が続々刊行されている。
昨日につづいて本日もGetUpEnglishはそのなかから気になったセリフの英訳を紹介する。
『鬼滅の刃』が人気のあることのひとつに、時どきユーモラスな場面が出てくることがあると思う。
第３巻で竈門炭治郎が矢琶羽と朱紗丸の戦っているときに、愈史郎が珠世にいうセリフ。

diversion（この場合は「(注意などを)そらすこと」）を使って巧みに訳している。

「『鬼滅の刃』を英語で読む」シリーズ、もう少し読み進めて再開したい。
大人気の『鬼滅の刃』だが、英語圏でも人気で、Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaibaのタイトルで翻訳書が続々刊行されている。
本日のGetUpEnglishはそのなかから気になったセリフの英訳を紹介する。
第1巻で竈門炭治郎が鬼に惨殺された家族を見る前に心の中でつぶやくセリフ。

off-loadは動詞として使われて「〈積荷を〉降ろす (unload)」のほか、「売り払う、処分する」の意味でも用いられる。
レアジョブ英会話のDaily News Articleの昨日の記事に、この表現があった。

According to one report, Adidas is aiming to complete the sale early next year. Prior to Covid-19, Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted initially planned to off-load Reebok for around $2.4 billion. The brand’s current selling price is still unknown, but the report estimates Reebok’s value to be around $995 million.
メンバーの方はぜひ音声も確認してほしいが、Adidasの発音は思っているのとは違うかもしれない。
固有名詞の発音が不適切だと、ネイティブ・スピーカーに突っ込まれる、特にかなり英語ができるノンネイティブ・スピーカーは英語の固有名詞を不適切な発音をしただけで、かなりうれしそうに指摘を受ける、バカにされることになるので、注意しよう。（向こうにすれば、見たこともないアジア人にライターの仕事を奪われる可能性があるので、気持ちはわかるが。）

off-loadはoffloadのつづりでも用いられる。そして「（悩み･罪など）を打ち明ける」の意味でも使われる。

2017年11月5日、クリスティーズの競売で日本円にして約510億円で落札された有名な絵がある。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ（1452～1519）作とされる「サルバトール・ムンディ」だ。美術品取引史上の最高額ということで世界的に大ニュースになった。本書『最後のダ・ヴィンチの真実――510億円の「傑作」に群がった欲望』は、その顛末を執念深く追ったノンフィクションだ。
ハードカバー本を大幅修正
この絵画作品は、本当にダ・ヴィンチのものなのか。これまでどこにあったのか。510億円の価値があるものなのか。著者のベン・ルイスは、調査に乗り出す。美術評論家にしてドキュメンタリー・フィルムの制作者――そんなルイスが、この作品に引き付けられ、調べ始めたのはおそらく自分の職業から来る本能のようなものだろう。
翻訳家で、本書の邦訳を担当した上杉隼人さんが、「訳者あとがき」で調査の概要を丁寧に説明している。それによると、ルイスの調査は、母国イギリスから始まり、イタリア、フランス、ロシア、オランダ、アメリカと広がる。各地の図書館、美術館、写真アーカイブはもちろん、オンライン記事や法律文書にも目を通し、何人もの関係者の話を聞いた。
本人が巻末に記した謝辞には合計99の人物、団体への感謝が記されている。もちろん本件で重要な役回りを担った人物の多くに直接会っている。
こうして19年4月にイギリスで、同6月末にはアメリカで本書の原著が発売された。上杉さんは同10月末から翻訳作業に取り掛かり、20年2月には一通り訳し終えた。
ところが、である。ルイスからほどなく大幅な修正版が届いた。「サルバトール・ムンディ」を発見し、これはダ・ヴインチ作に間違いないと主張する人たちが、ルイスの原著に反論する内容の本を19年11月にオックスフォード大学出版局から刊行したからだ。
ルイスは、この本を読んで情報を差し替え、新たに判明した事実を加えて、ペーパーバックス版を20年4月に緊急出版した。上杉さんのところに届けられたのは、その修正版の原稿だった。9か月前に刊行されたハードカバー本とは、もはや別物になっていたという。
落札したのは誰？
この辺りの丁々発止、息詰まる攻防を知るだけでも、この問題がいかに欧米の美術業界を震撼させているか、その一端を知ることができる。「史上最高値」の取引だけに、その価値を守る側も、揺さぶる側も絶対に譲れないのだ。

著者にインタビューすることも多い。
翻訳者として、インタビュアーとして、著者やエージェントと満足なコミュニケーションをはかるには、相手の言っていることが大体ではなく、一語一語すべて理解できないといけない。
そのためには見た単語を発音音声と一致させて覚える必要がある。

Daily News Articleは毎日チェックして、基本的にスクリプトは見ずにlisteningだけで理解できることを目指している。
先日のニュース記事No Difference in Creativity between the Arts and Sciences, Study Saysにはこの表現があった。
Cropley said that the study is valuable to educators and institutions, especially in terms of evaluating students’ creative capabilities. He hopes that education systems will move toward a more holistic approach when it comes to teaching creativity.
このholisticは「全体論の、全体論的な」の意味で使われる形容詞で、GetUpEnglishでも学習した。

発音ももちろん記事全体の朗読音声で確認できる。
Economistなどのポドキャストも利用しているが、こちらはこうした注などがなく、内容を理解するので精いっぱいだ。

National Book Awards 2020 for Fictionに輝いたCharles Yu, Interior Chinatownにこの表現があった。

このあたりのアジアのガリガリのガキどもはみんなそいつを夢見ている。

「痩せた」といえば、slender, skinny, thin, bonyなどなど、いろんな言い方がある。

女の子に「やせてるね」と声をかける時、どんな形容詞を使うだろうか？
slenderの他、skinny やthin, bonyなどを思い浮かべるかもしれない。
しかし、ネイティブの女の子はslenderといわれれば喜ぶだろうが、thinといわれたら怪訝な顔をするかもしれない。 それはslenderには「ほっそりとして素敵だね」というニュアンスがあるのに対し、thinは「病気などが原因でやせている」と受け取られる可能性があるからだ。
このように、日本語では一般的に「やせた」と訳される語も、ネイティブの感覚では微妙に意味が異なる場合がある。そのちょっとした感覚の違いを、本書でわかりやすく説明したい。
たとえば「やせた」の同義語を見ても、petite, slender, slim, svelte, sleek, skinny, thin, lanky, bony, gangly, scrawny, emaciated, anorexic, haggard, skeletal…などなど、膨大にある。
本書では、こうした語の中からネイティブがもっともよく使うと思われる5語を選び出し、そのニュアンスの違いを例文とともに解説する。

Thayne） 1959 年アメリカ生まれ。カリフォルニア州アズサパシフィック大学（Azusa Pacific University）で、社会学修士号取得。 証券会社勤務を経て、来日。日米会話学院、バベル翻訳外語学院などでの豊富な教授経験を活かし、現在までに100 冊以上、累計300 万部の著作を刊行。日本で25 年以上におよぶ豊富な英語教授経験を持ち、これまで教えてきた日本人生徒数は数万人に及ぶ。英会話学校経営、翻訳、英語書籍・教材制作などを行なうクリエーター集団A to Z（www.atozenglish.jp）の代表も務める。著書に、『英語ライティングルールブック――正しく伝えるための文法・語法・句読法』（DHC）、『その英語、ネイティブにはこう聞こえます』（主婦の友社）、『爆笑！英語コミックエッセイ 日本人のちょっとヘンな英語』（アスコム）、『やり直し教養講座 英文法、ネイティブがもっと教えます』（NHK 出版新書）、『ネイティブが教える英語の語法とライティング』『ネイティブが教える英語の動詞の使い分け』『ネイティブが教えるほんとうの英語の冠詞の使い方』（研究社）ほか多数。
