DEPENDABLE

　2007/05/20のGetUpEnglishでは、「頼りになる、頼もしい、信頼できる」という意味で使われるreliableを紹介した。

　今日のGetUpEnglishでは、これとほぼ同じ意味で使われるdependableを学習しよう。　

　reliableはto rely(on)（「［人を］信頼する、頼りにする」「［もの・ことを］当てにする、［……に］依存する」）から派生したが、dependableもto depend on[upon]から来ている。状況によっては、「頼りになる」という意味で用いられると思う。

○Practical Example

　"Xanthe’s really dependable. She is a perfect writer and always meets her deadline."

　"And she’s a great narrator, too. We can always depend on her."

　「ザンティはほんとうに頼りになる。完璧な記事を書いてくれるし、締め切りも守ってくれる」　

　「そして彼女はナレーターとしてもすばらしい。ザンティをいつも頼りにしている」

●Extra Point

　反意語はundependable（頼りにならない）だ。

　"Ueno is totally undependable. He always writes what he wants and never gives what we want."

　"And he’s a terrible editor, too. He always tries to rewrite as he likes without the author's permission. You just can’t depend on him."

　「上野氏はまったく頼りにならない。いつも自分の好きなように書いて、こちらの注文通りには書いてくれない」

　「そして編集者としても最低だ。著者に何の断りもなく、いつも自分の好きなように書き換えてしまう。あの人はまったく頼りにならない」
