TO OWE

　動詞oweは「（人に金銭上の）借りがある、…に（ある額）の借金［つけ］がある」

　I owe the tailor 100,000 yen. ＝I owe 100,000 yen to the tailor.

「洋服屋に 10 万円つけがある」

のように使われるが、次の受身形が可能である。

　Fifty thousand yen is owed (to) the tailor.＝The tailor is owed fifty thousand yen.

　この受身形の言い方はよく覚えておこう。

　現在、鋭意翻訳中の本に次の表現がある。

By May 1650 the Commonwealth had made only £7,750 from sales of the king’s pictures. So Parliament changed its approach, deciding that instead of selling the pictures, it would use them as payment in kind to Charles’s former employees and contractors, many of whom were owed money by the Crown for services rendered. Over seven hundred pictures were distributed among nearly a thousand of Charles’s creditors in London. They were given to widows, orphans, goldsmiths, soldiers, vintners, musicians, cutlers, drapers and tailors. To cite just one example, a plumber who was owed £903 was given £400 in cash and a Titian. The art market was democratised for an instant, a short-lived cultural revolution never to be repeated anywhere in the world.
