　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を紹介する。

サノスによって多くの人が消された後の社会＊では、持てる者と持たざる者に戻るようなことはなんとしても避けたい。それでどうなるか、みんなわかってる。自分のことだけを考えて、たがいに睨みをきかせるようなことはやめて、力をあわせて世界を今よりいい場所にしなければならない。

ご覧の通り、口語表現満載で、辞書が教えてくれない表現もあるが、こうした表表現を理解し、日本語にできる喜びを感じられるからこそ、英日翻訳を続けられるのだと思う。

英語が理解できたという喜びはいつになっても変わらない。

　characteristicは「特徴」。

　こちらは文字がびっしり詰まっている上に、口語表現だけでなく、洒落た言い方もたくさん入っていて、大変勉強になる。この本に、以下の表現があった。

ドラマのお楽しみのひとつは、僕らがサムとバッキーになり切って演じていることだ。

　lean on our own characters’ characteristicsは試訳くらいに処理すればよいと思う。

EXPOSED

　exposedは形容詞として「《危険などに》さらされた; 絶縁されていない; むきだしの, 露出した」（リーダーズ）といった意味で使われる。

　だが、英日翻訳では状況によってはなかなか訳しにくいことがある。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を学習しよう。

「その作品は世間の批判にさらされた」

  もう一例。翻訳中のトマス・J・デロング『Flying Without a Net 命綱なしで飛べ！』（仮題、2023年刊行予定、サンマーク出版）にあった表現だ。

"On the other hand, if you fall off and think you are behind, you begin to feel exposed and frightened that you are losing the race."

「だが、組織から外れてしまっている、仲間に後れを取っていると思うことがあれば、自分は出世競争に敗れつつあると不安が生じ、居ても立ってもいられなくなる」

  feel exposed and frightenedはthat以下のことで、「危険にさらされていて、おそろしいと感じる」ことであるから、試訳くらいでよいと思う。
