EXPATRIATE

　expatriateという語は、ex（out［外］）とpatria（country［国］）の二つの要素からできている。どちらもラテン語語源である。したかって、expatriateは、「国籍離脱者」「国外在住者」という意味。 しかし、状況によっては、「外国人」という意味で使われると思う。

○Practical Example

　“A lot of expatriates complain about things just because they’re different from things in their own country.”

　“Yeah, I often wonder why they don’t go home.” 　

　「多くの外国人が、自分の国と物事が違うことに不平をもらす」　

　「ああ、だったら、自分たちの国に戻ればいい、といつも思うよ」

　短縮形expatも最近よく使われる。

　“There are a lot of Polish expats living in Britain these days.”

　“That’s right. They even have their own newspapers, I hear.” 　

　「この頃はイギリスにポーランドからの移住者がたくさん住んでいる」　　

　「そうだ。自分たちの新聞も持っているらしい」
