MINE

　mineはIの所有代名詞であるが、myの古い形としても使われる。　

　そしてこれは詩や小説、あるいは演説などで、効果的に用いられる。　

　今日のGetUpEnglishでは、このmineの使い方を、アメリカを代表する二人のアフリカ系アメリカ人の演説から学ぼう。　

　まずは、アメリカの黒人公民権運動指導者マルコムX（Malcolm X, 1925?65）の1964 年４月12日の名演説“The Ballot or the Bullet”から。

○Practical Example

　"Uncle Sam still has the audacity or the nerve to stand up and represent himself as the leader of the free world. Not only is he a crook, he’s a hypocrite.　Here he is standing up in front of other people, Uncle Sam, with the blood of your and mine mothers and fathers on his hands, with the blood dripping down his jaws like a bloody-jawed wolf, and still got the nerve to point his finger at other countries."

　「アンクル・サム（アメリカ政府）は、まだ自分が自由世界のリーダーとして立ち上がり、代表するという図々しさと神経を持ち合わせている。こいつは悪党であり、詐欺師だ。そしてここでまた、別の人の前に立ち上がっている。アンクル・サムは、その手にみんなとわたしの父と母の血をにじませているぞ。その顎からは、その口に血をみなぎらせる狼と同じように、血がしたたり落ちている。そしてまだほかの国を指し示す神経を持ち合わせているのだ」

●Extra Point 　

　そしてもう一つは、マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア牧師（Martin Luther King Jr.）が暗殺される１日前に行なった名演説“I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”(April 3, 1968)から、ご紹介する。

　"But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And so I’m happy tonight; I’m not worried about anything; I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."

　「しかし、でも、みなさんには、本日知っていただきたいのです。わたしたちは、人間として、約束の地にたどり着くでしょう。だから、今夜はとてもうれしいです。何も心配していません。誰もおそれていません。わたしはこの目で、神の来訪の賛美を確認しました」
