TO THINK ON ONE’S FEET

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、to think on one’s feetという表現を学習しよう。

　これは「「すばやく考える、即座に決断する」という意味で使われる

○Practical Example

　"You can depend on Shikamaru. He's as steady as a rock."

　"He has amazing ability to think on his feet." 　

　「シカマルは頼りになる。どんなときも慌てることはない」　

　「頭の回転が驚くほど速いね」 　

　as steady as a rockは、「きわめて安定した、全くぐらつかない」「（人が）信頼できて［忠実で］」。

●Extra Point

　「即座に考える［答える、行動する］」という意味でも使われる。

　"Caught off guard by the press, the politician made an unfortunate comment."

　"A good politician has to be able to think on his feet."

　「マスコミに不意をつかれて、あの政治家は不用意な発言をしてしまった」

　「有能な政治家は、何があろうと即座に質問に答えられなければならない」

TURNING BACK

　本日のGetUpEnglishでは、turning backという表現を学習する。

　turning backは、「引き返すこと」。

○Practical Example

　"The group turned back due to inclement weather conditions."

　"It was wise of them." 　

　「一行は天候不良のため、引き返した」　

　「賢明だったわ」

●Extra Point

　"There's no turning back."という言い方はよくする

　"I am afraid this plan isn't going to work after all."

　"We've already put a lot of money into it. There's no turning back now."

　「この企画、やっぱりうまくいかないんじゃないか？」

　「すでに大変な額の予算をつぎ込んでいるんだ。今さら後戻りはできないんだよ」

DOG-EAT-DOG

　今日のGetUpEnglishでは、この犬にからんだ表現を紹介します。

　dog-eat-dogで「冷酷に私利私欲を追求す、われがちの、食うか食われるかの」。

○Practical Example

　"We were good friends."

　"Friends are friends, but in this dog-eat-dog world, you have to learn to be hard, Naruto."

　「俺たちはいい友だちだったんだってばよ」

　「友だちは友だちだけど、この弱肉強食の世界では、心を鬼にしなくてはいけないよ、ナルト」。

　次のような使い方もする。

　"I understand the pay at that company is quite good."

　"But working for that kind of foreign firm is a dog-eat-dog existence where anything can happen."
