　customerは、「顧客、得意先、取引先」。

　“How’s business, Rupert?”

　“Terrible. Many of our customers have abandoned us for a rival company.” 　

　「ルーパート、仕事はどう？」　

　「てんでだめだ。多くのお客さんをライバル社に取られてしまった」

●Extra Point 　

　口語表現で「やつ、人 （fellow, chap）」の意味でも用いられる。辞書によっては、「男」と定義してあるものもあるが、女性に対しても使う。

　“No. She’s a tough customer. She always insists on getting her own way.”
