TO POLISH

　銀を研いだことのある人は、to polishという表現を知っているだろう。しかし、みなさんはみなさんの英語をto polish, あるいはto polish upできる。いかにも、英語力を「磨く」ことができるのだ。（毎日GetUpEnglishをチェックして、そして『日めくり現代英語帳』の上下巻を読んで英語力に磨きをかけていただけるのであれば、とてもうれしいです！）

○Practical Example

　“I’m thinking of going to Manila for a holiday.”

　“Great idea, Atsuko. You can polish up your English there by speaking to people.” 　

　「休みにマニラに行こうと思う」　

　「それはいいわ、敦子。現地の人と話せば、英語力に磨きがかかるわよ」　

●Extra Point 　

　to polish offは違う意味に、すなわち「（仕事・食事などを）すばやく仕上げる［片づける］」という意味になる。

◎Extra Point

　“Hey, is anyone going to polish off the last piece of cake?”

　“You have it, Nigel. It’s got your name on it.” 　

　「ねえ、だれかケーキの最後のひと切れを片付けちゃわない？」　

　「ナイジェル、あなたが食べちゃいなさいよ。あなたの分よ」

　“It’s got your name on it.”は、ここでは「それはあなたものだ」（It’s all yours.）という意味。
