SUPPLEMENT, TO SUPPLEMENT

　supplementは日本では「補助食品、サプリメント」の意味でよく使われるが、違う意味でもよく用いられる。　

　今日のGetUpEnglishでは、この語の使い方を学習しよう。　

　まずは、その「補助食品、サプリメント」の意味で使われる用例から。

○Practical Example

　"Regularly taking supplements for your health is not really that healthy, Michael."

　"Yes, I must have nutritious food and rest properly." 　

　「健康にいいからとサプリメントを常用するのは、ほんとうは体によくないよ、マイケル」　

　「うん、ぼくは栄養のある食べ物と十分な休息を取らないといけないね」

●Extra Point

　動詞も同形で「補う、補足する」の意味で使われる。

　"Jeff supplements his income by teaching English. I know."

　"He can't live solely on writing novels." 　

　「ジェフは英語を教えて収入を補っている」　

　「知っている。小説だけでは食べていけないんだ」

★Extra Extra Point

　動詞では「・・・・・・に補遺［追録、付録］をつける、追加する」、そして名詞では「（巻末・別冊の）付録、補遺」の意味でも使われる。

　"Watanabe-sensei wanted to supplement new information to his three volumes of Lectures on American Literature for Japanese Scholars and Students." 　

　"He wrote the supplement to three books and at last finished the latest, biggest history of American literature. He's really great." 　

　「渡辺先生は『講義　アメリカ文学史［全3巻］』に新しい情報を追加しようと思われたんだ」　

　「そしてその3巻本の補遺版を書き上げて、ついに最新・最大のアメリカ文学史を完成したんだ。先生はほんとうにすごいよ」
