ON THE WAGON

　これは面白い表現だ。「禁酒している［する］」の意味でよく使われる。

○Practical Example 　

　"Go-san used to drink a lot but now has been on the wagon. Why?"

　"He damaged his health and stopped drinking. I hope he recovers soon." 　

　「郷さんは昔はすごくお酒を飲んだけど、今は酒をやめている。なぜだ？」　

　「体を悪くして、酒をやめたのさ。早くよくなってくれるといいな」

　これは元々on the water drinkという形で用いられた。water wagonは「給水車」のこと。「酒の代わりに水を飲んでいる」の意から来た。

●Extra Point 　

　off the wagonという言い方もあって、これは「酒をまた飲むようになっている［なる］、禁酒をやめる」。

◎Extra Example 　

　"Go-san used to be a heavy-drinker, but I heard he has been on the wagon since he damaged his health."

　"After he recovered completely he jumped off the wagon." 　

　「郷さんは昔は大酒飲みだったが、体を壊して酒をやめたと聞いた」

　「完全に回復して、それからまた飲み始めたよ」
